RV Boondocking Capital of the Southwest Located on Interstate 10 about two hours west from Phoenix towards LA, almost at the border line between California and Arizona. Quartzsite is a seemingly sleepy little town with barely 2000 full time residents. In the mid 1800's it was Tyson Wells Stage Station. In 1857 it was the site of a great camel experiment, when Secretary of War Jefferson B Davis used camels to transport army cargo west from Texas. The experiment didn't last, but the camel driver, Hadji Ali (Hi Jolly) spent his last years in Quartzsite, lending his name and his legend to many local sites. The 1950's brought the era of long vacations on the open road, and "snowbirds" found the mild winters a pleasant alternative to dreary winters back home. The Quartzsite Improvement Association was formed in 1965, and sponsored the first Quartzsite Pow Wow in 1967. From this humble beginning, Quartzsite has grown into the "Gem and Mineral Capital of the World." Every winter over a million people visit this jewel in the desert. They come in wheeled homes to partake of sunshine, friendships renewed year after year, and what must surely be the biggest swap meet on the face of the planet. The entire valley becomes a camp ground for vendors and buyers, a small town street fair for grown ups, a world all its own.
