Note: As of January 1st, 2002 California State law mandates that all children under the age of 6 or 80 pound must use a car or booster seat.

The following are Laws Regarding Passengers Riding in RVs. Last updated on June 19th, 2001. Please check with your law enforcement agency before traveling.

Legend

N/S Not specified.  In the absence of a state statute or regulation that prohibits passengers from riding in campers, or specifically authorizing it, state enforcement agencies uniformly conclude that passengers may ride in truck campers.
1 Truck camper must be equipped with audible or visual communication system between camper and driver (horn will not suffice)
2 Fifth wheel must be equipped with safety glass, an audible or visual communication device between trailer and driver and one unobstructed entrance capable of being opened from both outside and inside.
3 Fifth wheel must be equipped with passenger coupling device and shall have a 2-inch or larger kingpin.
4 Fifth wheel must be equipped with safety glass and some means of approved electronic or electrical communication between driver and trailer.
5 No one under age of 12 permitted in trailer unless accompanied by a person 16 or older, and trailer must be equipped with two-way communication system between driver and trailer.

No matter what the laws say, it is not a safe practice to allow any living thing, other than a plant, to ride in any vehicle which is under tow.
